How to Beat SNGs
(last updated April 25th, 2010)

How to Reach the Cash
While nobody can guarantee that you will place in the cash, here is how you reach the bubble.... after that, it's up to you.

BASIC SNG DETAILS
1. Most SNGs are single-table "Sit 'N Go" Tournaments
2. Nine players (on Full Tilt Poker) start with 1,500 in chips and play down to one player
3. Top 3 places get paid  (1st gets 50% of entries; 2nd = 30%; 3rd = 20%)
4. Generally requires 1 hour to complete - unless you bust out early
(some SNGs finish in 20 minutes while others can last longer than 90 minutes)
5. Generally lose one player for every 10 hands (see 6a & 6b)
6a. Table Aggressiveness - if after 15 hands, only 6 players left - sit back and fold your way to `cash'
6b. Normally after 50 hands, if there are not 5 empty seats (or 4 empty seats plus 1 or 2 wounded players - less than 1/2 chips left), then you will need to actually win some some chips to reach `cash'

SNG Test #1
1. Enter single table $1 No-Limit Hold 'Em SNG (with longest blind times - not Turbos, etc.)
2. Do NOT Bet, or Sit-Out, or use Pre-Action buttons, or use CHAT (leave chat on), or delay clock (stall)
3. FOLD EVERY HAND!  (even AA)
4. CHECK big blind if no raise - fold to any bet (unobservant players may fold to big blind)
5. Watch and take notes on other players
6. Research opponents (see Researching Your Opponents)
7. Why play like this? - gives you a good understanding of SNGs and tests your discipline and patience required for playing a good tight game

SNG Test Sample Game #1   (played Aug. 9, 2009)
Hand   1 to 27 - Folded - 8 players left
Hand 28 to 31 - Folded - 7 players left
Hand 32 to 43 - Folded - 6 players left
Hand 44 to 55 - Folded
Hand 56 - Table folded to my big blind - won 160 (see note on distracted players in Researching Your Opponents)
Hand 57 to 60 - Folded - 5 players left
Hand 62 - Table folded to my big blind - won 160 AGAIN!
Hand 67 - In Big Blind - Small blind called and checked to river - won 200
Hand 82 - Blinded-out - 4th place - all 3 players left `cash'
Hand 83 - 2 players left
Hand 85 - 1 player left (was within 3 hands of 1st)
NOTE - As table gets short of players, the blinds come around VERY quickly

SNG Test Sample Game #2   (played Aug. 12, 2009)
Hand 1 - Folded - 4 All-In - AKs vs KQo vs 87o vs 55 (87o hit flush!) - 6 players left
Hand 2 - Folded - 3 All-In - 4 players left
Hand 3 - Folded
Hand 4 - Folded
Hand 5 - Folded - 2 All-In - 3 players left (remaining players in `cash')

SNG Test Sample Game #3   (played Aug. 12, 2009)
Hand 1 to 4 - Folded - 8 players left plus 2 severely wounded (less than 1/2 chips left)
Hand 5 - Folded - 6 players left (and NO wounded) - in 3rd place
Hand 6 to 19 - Folded - 5 players left - in 4th place
(if game remains aggressive, can fold into `cash')

SNG Test #2
1. Enter single table $1 No-Limit Hold 'Em SNG (with longest blind times - not Turbos, etc.)
2. Do NOT Sit-Out, or use Pre-Action buttons, or use CHAT (leave chat on), or delay clock (stall)
3. Bet with only 3 hands - AA, KK and AK (fold every thing else)
4. With AA, KK and AK - bet POT pre-flop (use BET POT button), POT bet on Flop, Turn and River
(stop betting if flop is coordinated or scary like 9s-8s-7s, or J-J-J, or if a passive player becomes aggressive)
5. Watch and take notes on other players
6. Research opponents (see - Researching Your Opponents)
7. Why play like this? - to help determine the sweet-spot between folding every hand and being `Selectively Aggressive'
